Baldur's Gate 3: Overcoming Challenges for an Xbox Debut
Mon Jul 03
Larian, the developer of Baldur's Gate 3, is currently facing challenges in bringing the game to Xbox Series X | S. Swen Vincke, the boss of Larian, revealed to IGN that achieving this goal might require some "compromises" during the development process.
Vincke explained that the game's vast scale, offering players a high level of freedom in their actions, has necessitated a significant amount of optimization. When it comes to Xbox platforms, the team is striving to ensure a consistent experience across both Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, especially concerning features like the split-screen mode.
"We had support from the ATG group. They've been doing great. They've been helping a lot. Everybody wants this out on Xbox. It's not that we don't want it out on Xbox. It's just that, our problem–and this is us, Larian–is that we just made a very big game. And it's a very complicated game," continued Vincke.
While Larian is thankful for the assistance from the Xbox Advanced Technology Group (ATG), Vincke believes it's essential to release the game when it's ready on each platform rather than withholding the finished version for a simultaneous multi-platform release.
"If we were to do ultimate parity on all the platforms, we would have to wait I don't know how much time before we would be ready," he continued. "That's why it's important we release it now, we release it when it's ready on PS5, and we release it when it's ready on Xbox."
In summary, Larian is working diligently to bring Baldur's Gate 3 to Xbox Series X | S, and while some compromises may be necessary, the team is committed to delivering the best possible experience on each platform. The support from Microsoft's ATG has been invaluable in overcoming challenges during the development process.
