STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Work is underway at 430 New Dorp Lane, where Aldi signs have been placed prominently on the store’s façade as well as on the large multi-tenant pylon sign of the shopping center. However, many local shoppers are eager to find out when the budget-friendly grocery store will officially open. Company officials have indicated that it will be several more months before Staten Islanders can start shopping there.
“We are thrilled to announce that a new ALDI is set to open in Staten Island this summer,” stated Chris Daniels, vice president of Aldi’s South Windsor division, in a recent announcement.
The store's announcement clarifies misinformation discovered through a Google search, which incorrectly states that Aldi will open on Wednesday, January 15. A visit to the location reveals that construction is still in progress.

Aldi, which recently opened its first Staten Island store in Greenridge Plaza, filed plans for 430 New Dorp Lane -- in the space formerly occupied by Applebee’s, Mandee, Justice and New York & Co. -- on Aug. 7. The address, which offers 44,448 square feet of retail space at the corner of Hylan Boulevard, has been vacant for at least four years and was earmarked as a “supermarket anchor” by the shopping center’s realtor in 2021.
Work had been ongoing at the site, reportedly for an Amazon Fresh -- a tell-tale green-striped awning and rows of shopping cart bays in place for more than two years -- but Amazon never formally admitted the space was slated for one of its grocery stores. The e-tailer, however, filed for a conditional liquor license at that location and enabled a Wi-Fi hotspot in the parking lot -- both of which were recently removed after Aldi announced its intentions for the site.

Aldi, recognized for its straightforward selling approach and affordable pricing, has over 2,000 stores across 36 states, primarily located in the eastern region of the United States. The company is based in Batavia, Illinois, and has a workforce exceeding 25,000 employees.
The company opened its first Staten Island store in Greenridge Plaza on Sept. 12, and hundreds of customers waited in line to mark the event. The store itself is bright and spacious, with aisles wider than those found in a typical grocery store. And the selection is wide too: Shelves are stocked with a mix of meats, produce, quick meals and baked goods -- most products produced by Aldi’s private label.
