- Samsung has just improved the terms of its phone trade-in program
- There’s no longer a purchase requirement and it’s open all year round
- It's started in South Korea and France with more regions to follow soon
Tired of your Samsung phone and want to swap it for something new? Samsung has just improved its Galaxy Trade-In program to offer more generous terms, making it a tempting option if you’re looking to upgrade to one of the best Samsung phones.
Actually, one of the recent updates is that you are not required to exchange your old Samsung phone for a new model – there’s no obligation to make a purchase. Instead, you can opt to trade in your old device for cash if that suits you better. However, you might have to be patient, as the program has just been launched in South Korea and France. Samsung has indicated that it intends to "extend this offer to additional regions by 2025."
Previously, you had to purchase a new Samsung phone from samsung.com or the company’s app whenever you traded in an old one. If you already had one in mind and wanted to upgrade, that likely wasn’t much of a problem, but it was less convenient if you just wanted to get rid of an old device and leave it at that. And if you were switching from a Samsung device to an iPhone or a different Android product, it wouldn’t have worked for you at all.
Additionally, the program has seen another enhancement: you can now receive cash for your old phone at any time throughout the year, no matter where you are globally. Previously, this was only available if you resided in the US or many other Western countries. However, in South Korea, the trade-in opportunities were restricted to specific periods, which constrained your choices.
These windows were often linked to major product launches – like those coming at Samsung Unpacked 2025, for example – but that’s no longer the case.
Restricted eligibility

This seems like promising news for those looking to part ways with an old Samsung phone in 2025, regardless of whether they plan to upgrade to a superior model. However, there is a significant drawback that suggests the situation isn't entirely favorable.
Currently, the trade-in program is limited to select Samsung devices. This includes smartphones from the Galaxy S20, S21, S22, and S23 series. Additionally, it encompasses certain foldable models, specifically the Z Flip 3 through Z Flip 5, along with the Z Fold 3 to Z Fold 5.
Strangely enough, neither the Galaxy S24, the Z Flip 6 nor the Z Fold 6 can be traded in, even though they only launched last year. That means the range of products that are eligible for the program is fairly narrow.
That being said, the new arrangement is an improvement over the previous one. Although the selection of devices eligible for trade-in isn't extensive, there is now greater flexibility if you're considering taking advantage of Samsung's offer. If you were already contemplating trading in your old device, this update will surely be a positive development.
