The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has started giving out stimulus tax credits worth about $2.4 billion that have not been claimed yet. About a million taxpayers who met the requirements but did not ask for the credit during the fiscal year of 2021 will benefit from this payment.

Every eligible recipient may receive as much as $1,400 without any additional action required on their part. This amount will be disbursed either via direct deposit into pre-existing bank accounts or through a mailed paper check sent to the provided address. The IRS has stated that taxpayers need not take any further steps to obtain these funds.

Automated distribution of stimulus payments: What methods will the IRS use to deliver your funds?

Danny Werfel, Commissioner of the IRS, said that this process is meant to make it easier to get tax breaks. Werfel said in a statement, “We found that one million taxpayers who were eligible did not take advantage of this important credit.” “To make things easier, we are setting up automatic payments so that people do not have to file amended returns.”

These funds are the same as the three rounds of Economic Impact Payments that were given out during the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the third round, conducted in 2021, it was discovered that a significant number of taxpayers failed to claim the Recovery Refund Credit. Consequently, the automatic refund program was established to address this issue.

Criteria for eligibility based on taxation information

People who left the Recovery Rebate Credit line blank or recorded a $0 amount on their 2021 federal returns will get money sent to them automatically. The bank information that was on their most recent tax returns, for the year 2023, will be used to make deposits.

If the specified bank account remains closed, the bank will return the funds to the IRS. In such cases, a paper check will be generated automatically and mailed to the most recent registered address.

This ensures that the individuals entitled to receive credit do so effortlessly, without any additional actions required on their part.

Criteria for Individuals Who Have Not Filed Taxes

The IRS has announced that individuals who did not submit a tax return for the year 2021 but believe they are eligible for the credit can still obtain it by filing their return prior to April 15, 2022. Once this is completed, applicants will be able to receive the funds associated with the Recovery Rebate Credit.

The IRS recommends visiting its website or consulting a tax professional for additional details regarding the process. This initiative aims to ensure that all eligible taxpayers receive the benefits they deserve in a fast and straightforward manner.
