SACRAMENTO, Calif. — State budget officials unveiled more details Friday about Gov. Gavin Newsom’s proposed $322 billion budget. It funds Newsom’s signature educational initiatives — including universal pre-kindergarten —and starts to disburse billions of dollars from a voter-approved climate bond.
The budget proposal allocates $100 million for the purpose of dismantling homeless encampments and assisting individuals in finding shelter. However, it does not introduce any additional funding for the Homeless Housing, Assistance, and Prevention Program, which is a well-received grant that enables local governments to utilize homelessness funds according to their specific community needs. At present, there are existing unspent funds available for this program.
